Not just for Cats

It was on the spur of the moment on a brisk November morning, I turned around to see Hector sticking his head through the Cat Mate cat flap. I had my camera with me, I had been photographing another dog earlier, but it was Hector that stole the show that day. A series of photographs came from that auspicious moment, including ‘You Rang?’

But it has been ‘Not Just For Cats’ that has had the greatest response. I was thrilled to find out I had won the ‘Dog’ category of Comedy Pet Photography Awards 2024; then I found out that Hector and I were the overall winners. My response was characteristically concise and largely unprintable; I am ‘Comedy Pet Photographer of the Year 2024’ which makes me proud as punch.

This is the 5th year of these awards, and they go from strength to strength. Over 2000 photographs were considered in this good natured, friendly, competition. This was whittled down to a shortlist of 100 and then the finalists in the last 30. You couldn’t fail to laugh at the images, comical animal characters that you felt you could somehow relate to, that make you smile, and you want to know more about.

This was only the start…. Hector has featured in media outlets from New Zealand, Australia and India, to Peru, USA, Euronews…..but you know when you have made it when you get a full page in the Waitrose ‘Weekend’. What an adventure!!!

It just remains to wish Hector a happy 14th birthday......here is his official birthday pawtrait, like all celebrities! But it wasn't long before he was tucking into his birthday treats!
